World of Opinions Center for Polls conducted this survey with the aim of measuring the cultural and media trends of Jordanian youth. This was achieved through a number of indicators formulated to understand their tendencies toward reading non-academic books and the number of hours they spend reading them. The survey also included indicators to identify the nature of these books and the content they contain. Additionally, the poll featured indicators on internet usage among the youth segment, focusing on the number of hours they spend browsing the internet and the electronic content they visit. Furthermore, it included indicators to determine the media preferences of Jordanian youth by asking them about the most watched/followed local television channels, local daily newspapers, and local news websites.

The survey was conducted on a sample of 300 young men and women aged between 18 and 35. Data was collected through face-to-face personal interviews using tablets and smartphones. The data collection process took place between August 29 and September 9, 2016, preceding the parliamentary elections held in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on September 20, 2016.

Key Findings:

  • About half of Jordanian youth read religious books.
  • The overwhelming majority (96%) of Jordanian youth use the internet daily, though for varying numbers of hours.
  • Political and news content is the most visited by Jordanian youth when browsing the internet.
  • Roya TV is the most watched channel among Jordanian youth, at a rate of 42%.
  • 40% of Jordanian youth do not follow local daily newspapers at all; Al-Ghad and Al-Rai are the most widely read.
  • Only one out of ten Jordanian youth does not follow electronic news websites.
